Why is it important to get out of debt? Financial pressure can cause stress and have an impact on our mental and emotional health. Some people worry about money even when they have enough. Some people worry about money because they are in debt. There are others that are in denial of their financial situation. When in debt, the situation can sometimes seem impossible to change and lead to depressing thoughts however there are different supports available depending on the level of debt you are in. Most of us face financial challenges at one time or another. Debt can be a complex issue and not one solution fits all.
Get Out of Debt
If you are in debt can you identify why? Do you know what or who is causing your debt?
If your debt is so overwhelming, and you feel really stuck contact a debt counsellor or seek support from your local citizens advice centre. Don’t put this off – and remember you are not the only one in debt.
So even if you don’t feel you are at crisis level and you know you will get out of debt eventually, it can feel still feel uncomfortable and painful to address.
Here are some things you can do:
- Create a budget and stick to it
- Track your income and expenses – see where your money comes and goes
- Make a plan to get out of debt and set action steps to guide you
- Set a deadline for the debt to be cleared
- Put up reminders of your debt free goal so that you keep it a priority in your life
